Thanks for coming by to watch another episode of Vlog Soup.
In this episode I talk about Networked (Participatory) Journalism and look at some exciting raw footage of CNN correspondent Nic Robertson in Darfur, Sudan and in Iraq. I feature my friends Casey and Rudy's SciFi show Galacticast. Kent and Jen share their thoughts on the film, An Inconvenient Truth, at EbbandFlow.tv. Futurama and Al Gore make a cameo. I point to just released videos from the TED conference and show a little of David Pogue. Lots of fun!
Jeff Jarvis is really calling it Networked Journalism.
“Networked journalism” takes into account the collaborative nature of journalism now: professionals and amateurs working together to get the real story, linking to each other across brands and old boundaries to share facts, questions, answers, ideas, perspectives. It recognizes the complex relationships that will make news. And it focuses on the process more than the product.I guess Participatory Journalism fits this new definition too.

Technical notes:
FCP doesn't import H.264 files.
I had to use iSquint to get the files from H.264 to .mp4 after trying to do it with Sorenson didn't work. It might have been a settings issue, but the conversion overnight in Sorenson didn't allow importing.
iSquint was REALLY fast and made some nice mp4's for me to import into FCP.
Note to self: Change Quicktime Pro recording options from H.264 to something else.
Still frame.
Capturing a still frame on the MacBook Pro 17" gave me a capture that when brought into FCP was all pixelated. So I changed my screen resolution to a lower resolution and the screen caps looked better.
The CNN footage was m4v and that kept crashing FCP so I had to go back to iSquint and transcode that too into mp4
Trying to keep the show down to a manageable length so I can do more frequent shorter shows, but at this rate, no matter what I do, it still takes a long time to get each show done. This one only has four clips and it took all day!
YAY! You're the best, Steve! We've got tons of other ideas for audience participation, but we only want to do it once a month so that no one gets too tired of doing it for us! I can't wait to see KityKity's finished collaboratory music video when it's done... should be fun!

That rocked, Steve. Loved the Casey spot. Rudy and Casey are doing an amazing job over at Galacticast. Liked the "transparent" remark. Ha! One bit of constructive criticism: do something different with the music. Not sure if it is too loud or what... maybe you don't need it at all? I found it distracting in this episode. SO HAPPY TO SEE THE RETURN OF VLOG SOUP.

Thanks Amanda.
That music is from a new source for Creative Commons licensed music, ccmixter.org. It was the first song I listened to and I wanted to use it somehow. I really liked it.
What do others think? Too loud?

That was great!
Always dig your commentary, the audio and video kinda a fell out of sync, however for some reason it only added to this soup.

Thanks Nathan.
I just watched again and didnt see what you are referring to. I watched the Quicktime version. Did you watch the Windows version?
The only other thing I can think of that you might be referring to are the Max Headroom type edits.
Thanks.

Hi Steve,
I love all your vlog soups. I liked the soundtrack as you were talking. I do not think it was too loud at all. It could have been turned up just a little. But to each there own. Have a great one.
