In this week's Vlog Soup, we take a look at a number of different styles of videoblogging.
There's the moment showing style of capturing something and posting it without any editing, the edited moments crafted into a story, a podcast type of story enhanced with graphics, a comedy sitcom, an independent movie promo video podcast, and two citizen media interviews.
Lots of great content out there.
Note:
It takes over seven hours to put these shows together. To speed things up I record my intros directly onto the computer without going to tape first. My computer can't really keep up with the video capture since it's a 667mhz, so I cut in and out like Max Headroom. At a recent Meet the Vloggers meetup in Cambridge, the attendees were asked if they wanted me to take the time to make the audio/video perfect, and I got a resounding NO. The last show had many fewer cutouts. I'm somewhat bothered by it. What do you think? Please let me know.
1. A Moment Showing
little while is a repository for short, non-fiction moments.
little while encourages submissions. we're looking for one shot clips under 30 seconds. examples of what we're looking for include (but are not limited to) clips of: awkward dancing, smoke rising from the ground, objects inflating, motivational speakers, public displays of affection, and short order cooks. This is a great way for people to get started in videoblogging. Capture a moment and upload it. Hmm... I sound like Jay Dedman?
2. Another Moment
His Master's Toys vlog
Very Short Guide to Indian Roads.
I love getting these personal glimpses into other places.
3. From Minnesota
MN Stories
Every weekday, another story from Minnesota. Nice job on this from Chuck Olsen.
4. Audio enhanced with video
It's JerryTime!
A friend of mine put this video together of his brother.
It's like a podcast set to video, Steve Jobs would call it a video podcast.
It's all real too. See how real is better then unreal. Instead of Reality TV, let's try reality.
I put this site together with WordPress. My first experience installing the WordPress backend and using the default Kubrick template. Why that is hte default, I do not know.
5. A Comedy Sitcom
The Post Show is twice weekly online sketch comedy show created by Bob Castrone and Brian Levin.
Nice job guys at producing a regular comedy show. You had me watching the whole way through... and laughing.
6. A well done movie promo video podcast
Four Eyed Monsters Video Podcast
I found this over on their Four Eyed Monsters MySpace page.
They even wrote a tutorial on how to add video to MySpace.
I've just started using MySpace and am enjoying it. I've tried lots of social media sites, but MySpace is actually delivering things to me that I am actually interested in. I'm friends with two bands and a movie!
Update:
Arin from FourEyedMonsters writes in:
...one thing to clarify is that we don't look at it as much as a promo to the film as we do as part of the film. If you see the movie you'll understand what we are talking about and how the video podcast is an extension of the themes that are in the film. THat is why we look at what we are doing as very different from say King Kong, we look at our video podcast a story telling medium 1st and then yeah, it does also help us to build an audience for the film7 and 8. Citizens Media
JD Lasica of Ourmedia gives us a great example of citizens media. JD was at last weeks Portable Media Expo & Podcasting Conference in Ontario, Calif
There was no major media coverage of this, but it's something that I'm interested in. JD grabbed a few people after their presentations and interviewed them.
JD Lasica interviews Jason Calacanis
Mentioned in the interview:
Weblogs Inc., TWIT, digg, diggnation, Gizmodo, CNet
JD Lasica interviews Leo Laporte at the Portable Media Expo & Podcasting Conference in Ontario, Calif
"Audio is the best medium in fact, because it's inexpensive, it's a great medium for communicating ideas, video is not so good for ideas, it's so picture oriented that ideas get buried," Leo Laporte.
Without JD, coverage of this event I would not have gotten. ;-) Thanks JD! Great stuff.
Thanks for watching Vlog Soup. Let me know what you think in the comments or via email.
