Video: Gnomedex - Exciting People

On Day 2 of Gnomedex I got to the convention hall early to interview people as they arrived.

I'd recently been talking with a lot of people about what makes citizen media / personal media different from big media.

We are documentarians of life as we see and perceive it.

I don't go into a story with an angle. I don't have an idea where I want a story to go. I just doccument my experience.

Except for this video.

This time I decided to have two angles by asking each person two questions.

Question One, what was exciting about Gnomedex?

Question Two, what was dissapointing about Gnomedex?

By asking each person these leading questions, I thought I would be able to produce two reports. One about how great Gnomedex was, and the other about how dissapointing it was.

So I asked each person these questions and then shut off the camera. After shutting off the camera I had wonderful conversations with each person that I met. I really enjoyed meeting everyone.

Next came the editing. After putting together the 'Gnomedex was exciting' edit, I determined that there wasn't musch that was actually dissapointing about Gnomedex, so I added everyone's answer to that question into the credits.

This exercise showed me how much of an influence the reporters angle can have in shaping the story.

I have no angle.

The wireless was not as relaible as we'd like, so that's part of the reason for the poor quality of the video.

What I was doing was uploading the video from my GL2 over Firewire to my Powerbook and then up to audioblog.com

When you stream live video like that to audioblog, some throttling takes place. So that combined with the WiFi in the hall lead to stutters and dropouts.

BUT you did get to see the video of his speech just minutes after he finished, so for that, I think it was worth posting.

Just wait until a future where we'll all have reliable upload speeds and be able to stream all kinds of events live!
