The movie "School of Rock" was one thing, but now, with the release of his self-titled debut album, Joey Gaydos Jr. is entering a whole new school of rock. He wrote all the songs and plays most of the instruments on the album, a hard-rocking collection of tunes that sounds like a combination of Green Day and Aerosmith -- with a 13-year-old singing.

You don't need to have to be the sharpest tool in the box to realise that, above all else, Jack Black rocks. He's almost invariably the best thing in any film he's in, he's extraordinarily amusing (though quite possibly mad), and in his latest film, School of Rock he gets to rock for real. He's mad.

In 2003, fact outshone fiction at the cinema | csmonitor.com
8. "The School of Rock." The most accessible of Richard Linklater's movies is also the funniest, thanks largely to Jack Black, exploding with energy as a failed rock singer who turns a gaggle of coddled grade-schoolers into his latest steamin' band. Add sparkling performances by Joan Cusack as a wired-up principal and Mike White as the world's geekiest landlord - both totally in tune with Mr. Linklater's split-second comic timing - and you have a laugh-filled jam session that'll melt your face for sure. (See the movie if you're not sure what face-melting is.)#8, #8, we're #8!

Teaching kids to rock the boat.
More info on the kids:
No less impressive are the young performers who play the schoolkids. In casting a mix of professionals and first-timers, Linklater says that he wasn't so worried about acting ability - "most kids that age are pretty natural" - but he was keen to get a mix of interesting personalities, and some parts were completely rewritten to suit the character of certain individuals. But musical ability was a casting issue: "We scoured the country looking for prodigy-level musicians. They had to be a real band and had to be able to really play."Cheerio!
This presented a unique opportunity for Robert Tsai, who was discovered playing classical piano at the Lincoln Centre in New York. Taking on the role of the shy and socially under-confident Lawrence, the pre-teen learnt to play in a very different style for the movie - a challenge he took to with a great deal of skill and enthusiasm.

'School of Rock' gives viewers an education in comedy.
"The School of Rock" is the greatest film of the year. I have seen it twice now, and would love to watch it again. It is a feel-great movie that is perfect for all ages. Your kids will be trading in their Raffi CD's for Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, just the way Dewey Finn would want it. I raise my goblet of rock to you, Jack Black. We salute you.Review by Cameron Casper, a student at West Valley High School.

Paul Green's School of Rock Music is featured in a New York Times article today.
Dude, said one reveler with a pink buzz cut. "They're just like the kids from the `School of Rock.'Check out the trailer for the documentary, Rock School by Don Argott of 9.14 Pictures.Actually, Mr. Green argues, it's the other way around. Yes, like Jack Black's character, Dewey Finn, in the hit film, Mr. Green abandoned playing in amateur bands to teach youngsters how to rock 'n' roll, schooling them on the finer points of genres like prog rock, extolling the virtues of Pink Floyd. But he insists that his story is the original and not some well-timed remix.
Hmm... looks similar.
