Deval Patrick: Just Words Speech 10/15/06
Click to Play [ Length 2:34 ]
I will not engage in the politics of fear. Because fear is poisonous. All through history it has been used to hold back progress and limit fairness. Only hope defeats fear. It always has. At a candidates forum last week, the moderator asked each of us to say something nice about the other candidates. Kerry Healey rather grudgingly said, Well, he can give a good speech. She would know this not because she has ever attended a speech of mine but because she has them filmed by this fine fellow here. But her dismissive point, and I hear it from her staff, is that all I have to offer is words.
Just words.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.
Just words.
We have nothing to fear but fear itself.
Just words.
Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.
Just words.
I have a dream.
Just words.
Let me say it before you do: I am no Dr. King, no President Kennedy, no FDR, no Thomas Jefferson. But I do know that the right words, spoken from the heart with conviction, with a vision of a better place and a faith in the unseen, are a call to action.

Great coverage, Steve. He does give a good speech!

Chris Brogan was right. This is a great piece of video of a great piece of discourse. The video captures the feel of a thoughtful response. The angle of the shot moves away from the traditional person behind the podium look to let *us* see behind the podium. And the text, for an old rhetorical scholar, is a marvelous defense of the power of discourse. Thanks for putting this up.

Hi Steve- Great footage, and its nice to see politicians that are worthy of our hopes, people who seem to have vision (and delivery skills) and it is this sort of person who inspire others to get involved and act and change things for the better. yes, speeches can be empty air, but the speeches that move people to action and inspire are so much better than those that leave us feeling empty and hopeless afterwards. I want more Barak Obamas and Deval Patricks for this country, because they are passionate, and we need to have this sense of momentum and place from our leaders, rather than those who believe in taking the credit and passing the blame.
Excellent footage, and great work as always!

If he loses would he thnk about a move to California? Seriously, from what I saw I'd move him to Sacramento in a heartbeat.
Between Arnold and Phil it is no choice only the least of two vacuums.
Life is but a series of moments and this was a great job at capturing one of them.
Thanks.

I want to share some comments from over on Chris Brogan's blog:

Steve’s coverage of Deval Patrick was exactly what I had in mind. Why didn’t we have more of that - no 10 second sound bites, no splashy ads, but serious, hard-core coverage that gives as much raw access and data as possible?
Steve’s video of Deval Patrick was a major reason for my support of him as a candidate - it was the turning point.

I agree, Chris. Steve’s video was the reason I ended up supporting Patrick in the end, as well. I think it was the power of his “Words” speech. It really set him apart from the rhetoric of the other candidates. Not counting unicorn girl, I thought Christie was an interesting choice. But it was in my analysis of the strengths Deval Patrick displayed in his communication skills, and the positions he espoused that I felt I’d seen the candidate for me.
