Army Birthday
There was a celebration of the U.S. Army's 230th birthday in Cambridge, MA on Tuesday. Re-enactors were there, along with guys jumping out of helicopters and anti-war protestors.
This report was highlighted on Rocketboom's 6/15/2005 report, and can be seen on Akimbo. ;-)
Paratroopers Invade Harvard Square - Dowbrigade.

Wow, nice footage. I almost laughed when you backed away from the spontaneously combustible 'not-a-protester.'
Good stuff, this is why I love coming to SteveGarfield.com

Great coverage -- It put a smile on my face to see these two completely different worlds colliding in the small way that they were.
Thanks for capturing it and sharing it.
Did you ask any of the men in uniform about their thoughts about Iraq or the larger war on terror?

Hi Kent,
Thanks.
I didn't ask them.
I caught this happening in a 1/2 hour before a mtg.
So I basically, took a walk around the Cambridge Common and captured what was going on.
More of a cinema verite thing without any real agenda on my part, although I did want to make sure the protesters were given equal time to the army, so I guess I did have an agenda, as everyone does.
As as I think about it, by putting the anti war guy first, even though he actually was the first guy I spoke to , that gave him a lot of airtime in the piece.
You could take my footage and edit it to tell any number of stories.

I noticed that you did feature the anti-war protester so prominently and that you did give him so much airtime -- a bias that would've been eliminated by traditional journalistic standards.
I just upgraded up operating system this week so I can finally view MPEG-4 video and vlogs like yours and Rocketboom. So I'm catching up with the whole vlogging phenomena and trying to figure out how it'll fit into the production of my film projects.
But I'm encouraged to see that these types of dissenting voices are being heard.
The next thing I'd like to see is more dialogue between completley opposite paradigms and worldviews. Not have people screaming at each other like on cable, but to have a real exploration of different ideas trying to find the common ground and points of departure.
You did this to some extent by juxtaposing the different perspectives in the editing.
But I see a lot of potential for having more dialogue and deliberation mediated through vlogs. All the technology is there, but I think we're still a bit far from it culturally.
Anyway, enough rambling... I'll by drop to check more of your field reports. Looks like you've got the Boston New Media beat covered.

Great piece-- I love me some nutty protesters! (Probably one of the reasons why I live in San Francisco).
Question: how come the compression of this piece looks better on Rocketboom than the one posted here? The sound quality was the biggest change. Just curious as I learn more about it.
Posted by: schlomo | June 15, 2005 at 03:36 PM
Hi Schlomo,
Quality should be the same.
If you sre looking at the QuickTime Cable Modem version here, that is the same version I sent over to Rocketboom.
Click on Select Player below the video and check that it's QuickTime for Cable Modem. If it's set to as dial up version, the quality will not be as good.
Thanks,

Some aerial footage from those skydivers would have been cool.
I love your look at the very end of the piece. Were you trying to convey anything?
Posted by: starfire | June 15, 2005 at 09:57 PM
Hi Starfire,
I like that look at the end of the piece too.
What it means, I don't know.
I just like to show images that you usually don't see on TV.
Like moments would normally be edited out.
Thanks,

Nice work Steve. Although I think it was a mistake to go into Iraq, I found the way the demonstrators were protesting really annoying. It really grated on me. Anyway, thanks for capturing this scene.

hmmm..thank you for capturing this. I was particularly intrigued by the Vietnam VET. I would have liked to known more.

Great videos, Steve.
Hey, how do you get the photo to be the link to the film, rather than just post a word link? It's really cool. Is it a feature of your editing software, the video hosting people, or something else?
