Production Notes:
For this episode I used my Canon S400 camera. In addition to taking stills, it also takes movies.

I've used it before, but mention it this time because of the small image size of this movie. I shot 28 video segments with the S400 and then imported them into Final Cut Pro (FCP).

Once inside FCP, you can grab the image and resize it to fill the frame. That's what I normally do, but this time I didn't want to spend the time doing it, so what you are seeing is the size of the movie after it gets input to FCP.

Please leave us a comment telling us where you are watching from!

Thanks,
--Steve

Watching from Denmark. :o)

My first experience with an American supermarket resulted in information overload. Fortunately I got to experience smaller local supermarkets later on, the monstrosity I first met was just too much.

And coloured bell peppers are yummy (and the look fun!). I prefer the sweeter versions - orange and red. Try them on pizza!

when i go to the supermarket, all i buy is cookies.
i'm glad you do too.
you put the camera in the freezer!
that was my favorite shot.
where is there a roche brothers near jp?
i know they are in the suburbs but i've never seen one in the city.
hmmmmmm
nice episode guys!
why in such a little box though?
so you could see the titles better?
i want the big carol and steve back...

Hi Ryan,
Thanks! I loved doing that in the freezer shot too!

Roche Brothers is in West Roxbury.

The video was small because I was lazy.

The video was from my S400 and I had 28 segments... Too much to grab and drag for me.

You said, "I want the big carol and steve back..."

I hear you!

Roche Bros.! The center of life as we know it in West Roxbury! Say, was that my wife I saw behind you in the egg department? :-).

Hehe, thats a great clip, I like how you put the camera in the freezer.

I use my Canon Powershot A95 to take video's too, not bad at all, only I wish it didn't segment the clips!

The first time I went into an american supermarket, yes, it was crazy, everything was clean and neat and there were so many different varieties of everything, I can agree with Andreas, information overload.

One reason I recorded my video of going shopping is that people from other cultures could see the difference, especially my family back home in south africa.

The thing I find interesting about taking video's of what would be considered everyday life in our culture (such as food shopping) is that you look at what you normally would find perhaps boring/uninteresting with 'new eyes'. Perhaps part of it is entertaining to watch what you had experienced from a different point of view :)

I appreciate the videos of mundane "everyday life" which we find familiar yet different.
Supermarkets are sure larger than here in little ol'e New Zealand. I had just read Barry Schwartz's "The Paradox of Choice" over at ChangeThis http://www.changethis.com/13.ParadoxOfChoice so I was real keen to see the "285 varieties of cookies" ;-)

Ok. You totally reminded me I had to go to Roche Bros. after work! Thanks Carol & Steve!

A foreign viewer from Germany says:
Now I know what's the difference between shopping in America and in the rest of the world: In America you have to wear funny hats.

these rae getting better and better.
the music works on this one really well.
why is the video so small?
i want it bigger..

I love the theme music.

Upstate NY, I'm watching from.

Steve,

Love your blog. I find the Carol and Steve Show funny. You remind me of Steinfeld.

I am writing from Tucson, AZ where the winters are mild. We have been having a bit of rain recently and the Rillito River actually has raging water in it. Most of the year it is a dry wash.

Love seeing your shots of Cambridge and Boston. I used to live in Watertown in late 80's and hung out at Harvard Square a lot.

One question. How do you get both of you in the video? Do you have an assistant or some kind of rigging for the camera.

Keep up the good work.

Michael Klusek

Thanks Michael.

My mom says I look like Jerry too!

I use what I call an 'arms length shot' to get both of us in the frame. I usually hold the camera out at arms length and point it at us.

Either that or I use a tripod or just prop the camera up on something.

Thanks for watching,
--Steve

That episode made me glad I'm not married anymore....

:-D :-D :-D

Okay - just kidding! Liked the 'crunching' noise at the end. Very effective...

;-)

Watching from Providence, but will shortly be in China. My students will love it.

Cheers

Hello from Wales! We have supermarkets too!

Hello

We have really enjoyed "The Carol & Steve Show", so we wanted to try it and share our version of "The Nancy & Flo (or Flo & Nancy) Show". We used our Verizon Kyocera phone, but it only shoots 15 seconds.

Nancy and Flo Show

Hope you get a kick out of this ... and we are looking forward to Episode 7!

My reply (from Italy) is here: http://www.straughan.com/food/botmaiale.html

I get yelled at by the supermarket people when I take a camera in there...so I might never be able to film this wonderful part of my life...oh well I am glad I got to see this episode.
